Metal Powders for Aerospace Additive Manufacturing

Metal Powders for Aerospace Additive Manufacturing

The powder characteristics that matter when printing high-performance aerospace metal parts.

Aerospace additive manufacturing targets lightweight structures, consolidated assemblies, internal flow paths and low-volume high-performance hardware. These advantages increase the importance of reliable feedstock rather than reduce it.

Key powder requirements

Particle-size distribution affects layer thickness and packing. Sphericity and limited satellites support flow and uniform recoating. Low oxygen, controlled chemistry and minimal inclusions protect ductility and fatigue behavior. Internal pores in particles can also transfer into a build if the process does not fully eliminate them.

Matching powder to process

Nickel superalloys, cobalt alloys and titanium alloys each impose different limits. Laser powder-bed systems often favor finer fractions, while electron-beam systems commonly use somewhat coarser powder. PREP, gas atomization and plasma atomization can all be appropriate when their outputs are qualified against the actual machine and part requirements.

Traceability, lot testing, safe handling and reuse controls complete the path from powder specification to flight-worthy process evidence.
