Comparing VIGA, EIGA and PREP Metal Powders

How common atomization routes influence powder purity, morphology and additive performance.

Metal powder is a critical input to additive manufacturing, and its production route leaves a measurable signature on final behavior. VIGA, EIGA and PREP use different ways to melt and disperse feedstock.

Gas atomization routes

Vacuum induction gas atomization melts material in a crucible before a high-velocity inert-gas stream breaks it into droplets. It can provide strong throughput, though contact with refractory material may introduce inclusions or alter reactive alloys. Electrode induction gas atomization removes the crucible and therefore reduces this contact risk.

Rotating electrode route

PREP melts only the face of a rotating electrode under inert gas. Centrifugal atomization generally produces highly spherical particles with low satellite content and low porosity. Its size distribution is often coarser than some gas-atomized output, and electrode PREParation affects economics.

There is no universal winner. Specification, usable yield, oxygen limit and the downstream printing process should determine the selection.
